Planica 2023 candidacy presentation
15. 05. 2018
New day at the FIS Congress in Costa Navarino, Greece, also brought along presentations of the candidates to the FIS Council for the organization of World Championships.
The last stage towards the desired goal started at 14.15 CET, when the candidacy of Planica was presented by the president of the Ski Association of Slovenia Enzo Smrekar and Minister of Education, Science and Sport, dr. Maja Makovec Brenčič.
The presentation emphasized the meaning of Nordic skiing in Slovenia, where it has an outstanding tradition. We know that by now, we’ve brought home six medals from World Championships and seven from Olympic games. This tradition and this passion, which is invested in this are more than obvious. With this knowledge, experience and tradition we also organize seven World Cup competitions every year and prove every time, that we are capable to organize competitions on the highest level. All this passion can also be transferred to the Nordic World Ski Championships and make an unforgettable experience in the most beautiful alpine valley, where Triglav national park meets the modern Nordic center. I believe that this would be a fantastic memory for everone.

Today, Planica was presented at its best to the entire FIS and to the whole Nordic world. I believe that we’ve presented all the important attributes, from the fact that we have one of the best infrastructures to that that we have one of the most beautiful alpine valleys, not only in Europe but also more widely. Everyone that co-creates all the major sports events in Planica has the knowledge and willingness to live that and in a way that shows that Slovenia is a great sports nation. I say that we have sports in our genes. I hope that the FIS Council heard that today and of course we are strongly cheering for a positive decision. Than, in 2023, we’ll celebrate a meter more or a second less in Cross-Country and other things. That is our common desire.
