Dreams have come true

At the 43rd FIS Nordic Ski World Championships in Planica 2023, the 22-year-old Slovenian representative was the best on the large hill. Second place went to Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi, and David Kobacki from Poland won bronze.

The Slovenian flags and 8,500 spectators gave him extra energy for an outstanding second jump of 137 meters, which brought him his first world champion title in Ski jumping. Zajc joined Franci Petek, Rok Benkovič and Ema Klinec, who have won the FIS golden snowflake for Slovenia in Ski jumping.

Super strong Norwegian's win relay

The Norwegian men's relay team in cross-country skiing has not been defeated in the last twelve FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Together, they have won 27 medals in the relay, including 20 golds. Hans Christer Holund, Paal Golberg, Simen Hegstad Kueger, Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo. The Norwegian quartet took the lead at the beginning and held it all the way to the finish. Since the 1991 championship, the Norwegians have only missed out on a gold medal once, when the Austrians were better than them in Ramsau. The Finns won the silver medal, finishing almost 47 seconds behind the winners and they won their first relay medal since 2009. The third place went to the Germans. The Slovenian team finished the relay in 11th place, with a lag of six minutes and 42 seconds.

Magical Saturday in Planica

The first to take to the competition tracks will be the Nordic combined skiers, who have their final decision at the championship at 10:30. First, they will head to the top of the large hill and then at 3:00 pm they will face a 10 km skiing challenge.

The female cross-country skiers have the traditional 30 km classic race, starting at 12:00. The day will conclude with the ski jumpers' team competition on the large hill. This will also be the last ski jumping event at the championship in Planica.

The glittering golden happiness at the Medal Plaza

At the Medal Plaza, 24 new medals were awarded, as the best cross-country skiers from the relay events stepped onto the podium. Both in the women's and men's competition, the Norwegian representatives dominated the competition. For the most successful nation in cross-country skiing, these were the 20th and 21st gold medals at the championships in Planica.

You may not know...

  • Eric Frenzel has become the most successful athlete in the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. The German Nordic combined skier won his 18th medal in Planica, surpassing Norwegian cross-country skier Bjørn Dæhlie, who has a total of 17 medals, on the men's all-time medal list.
  • Norwegian cross-country skiers have access to 800 pairs of skis per season, while the Swedish team has half as many, 400. In a good season, a skier only breaks three running poles.
  • Technicians for cross-country skiers have to work 14-hours per day to prepare all the skies. On average, they ski 30 to 40 km per day while testing and servicing skis.
  • German Nordic combined skier Johannes Rydzek won gold in all four events at the 2017 World Championships in Lahti. This achievement could be repeated in Planica by Norwegian Jarl Magnus Riiber, who is only one win away from matching Rydzek's feat.
